Girls Get Set Project

Year 8 students worked with GE Aviation on a wearable technology day at the Tewkesbury Launchpad centre

This December 14 year 8 girls went to the Tewkesbury Launchpad to work with GE Aviation from Cheltenham on a ‘wearable technology day’ to inspire more girls to look at science based futures. Firstly we had a talk from ULTRA who specialise in making hi-tech equipment for the army. We experimented with google glasses which let us take photos through the glasses that then showed up on the TV and Myo wristband to remotely control PowerPoint. We learnt that ULTRA are aiming to produce wearable technology for the army that will reduce their pack size significantly.

We also had a session making electrical circuits with fans and speakers. The speakers played different tunes and we experimented with different amounts of power packs to enable the fan to go as high as possible, some people made them hit the ceiling!

Sadly we were unable to make LED T-shirts as the packs didn’t arrive so we had a final session which was a Dragons Den style activity to design a piece of wearable tech for 2025. All of the groups had to present their ideas and prizes were given for the best presentation, best teamwork and best product

Lara Collorick was part of the best product team; their idea being an innovative thermal dress. Georgina was part of the team which produced the best and most instructive presentation.

We are looking forward to our next session in the New Year which is a pit stop event.
