Music

Through Music students learn key skills in Performance, Composition and Appraising Music. We provide practical and theoretical learning opportunities for students to think and act as musicians.

Key Stage 3 (Years 7 to 9)

At KS3, students alternate their lessons between the Jampod and Music Technology rooms and the learning experiences in both rooms are designed to complement each other.

In Year 7, students begin with a key skills topic which focusses on underpinning the essentials of Rhythm and Pulse before moving onto a unit which introduces and develops Keyboard Skills.

Composition is taught through Chords and Theme and Variation units, with all the skills learnt through the year culminating in a Band Project in term 6.

In Year 8, students learn about Structures in Popular Music, which leads onto a related unit on Popular Music Theory. This enables students to access popular music notation such as TAB and to be able to work out chord symbols. This leads on to an Ensemble Performance unit and Music Technology Composition Unit on Film Music. The skills learn through the year culminate in a Protest Song Writing Project in which students study the topics and themes of Protest songs and then write and perform their own.

In Year 9, students currently have two music lessons per week having elected between to study either Art or Music at the end of Year 8. Students begin the year by following a Grade 1 ABRSM theory course entitled Music Theory 101. Music technology skills are developed further through a unit which introduces and develops the students’ knowledge and understanding of Logic Pro X through MIDI Sequencing and Audio Editing. Students continue to develop their ensemble skills through a unit which involves them Researching and Arranging a piece of their own choice, as well as also completing a Solo Performance Project at the end of the year. Year 9 is specifically designed to give students foundation skills to facilitate learning at KS4.
